Maggie's Center Groningen
The first Maggie’s Center in the Netherlands will be built in Groningen, close to the University Medical Center. This Maggie’s Center wants to provide a comforting environment for people with cancer, their partners, family and friends. Furthermore, Maggie’s offers a free integrative programme of psychosocial support and counselling, in addition to the medical care that hospitals can offer. Seven entrepreneurs took the initiative for the first Maggie’s Center in the Netherlands. In 2015 the Stichting Maggie’s Centers Nederland was founded, as official affiliation of The Maggie Keswick Jencks Cancer Caring Centres Trust in the United Kingdom.
The realisation of the first Maggie’s Center in the Netherlands comprises three stages:
1st stage: foundation, fundraising & forming partnerships
2nd stage: construction & furnishing of the Maggie’s Center in Groningen
3rd stage: exploitation of the Maggie’s Center in Groningen
Great architecture is vital to the Maggie’s formula: a building should offer a ‘healing environment’. Therefore, Maggie’s works with world-renowned architects like Zaha Hadid, Frank Gehry and Rem Koolhaas. The Maggie’s Center in Groningen is designed by award-winning architect Marlies Rohmer (MR A&U, Amsterdam) and internationally renowned landscape architect Piet Oudolf (Hummelo).
